Wisconsin diocese will not adopt Common Core in schools

September 17, 2014

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin, will maintain their own educational standards, rather than adopting the Common Core standards, the diocese has confirmed.

After public-school administrators in Wisconsin adopted the Common Core, Catholic schools were originally advised to consult both the Common Core standards and the existing diocesan guidelines. But Bishop David Ricken has concluded that "rather than have the two sets, we would stick with the diocesan standards," reports Joe Bound, the director of the diocesan office of education.

"The problem isn't the standards, but the other stuff," Bound said. He said that the diocesan educational standards could be updated if a review points out any deficiencies.
