Argentine judge who ordered probe of bishop's death meets with Pontiff

September 17, 2014

Pope Francis met on September 15 with an Argentine judge who was instrumental in securing the conviction of former military officers for the death of a Catholic bishop during the country’s “Dirty War” in the 1970s.

Bishop Enrique Angelelli of Rioja, a prelate with strong leftist sympathies, was killed on August 4, 1976, in a car crash. Police ruled the death accidental. But in 2010, Judge Daniel Ruben Herrera Piedrabuena ordered a new investigation, which eventually concluded that the bishop had been murdered. In July of this year, two former military officers were convicted of killing and sentenced to life in prison.

Judge Piedrabuena met with Pope Francis privately. The Vatican offered no statement about the meeting.
