Cocaine found in car registered to Vatican

September 16, 2014

Vatican officials have reacted with embarrassment after a car carrying Vatican diplomatic plates was stopped by French police, who discovered several pounds of cocaine in the vehicle.

The car officially belongs to Cardinal Jorge Mejia, the retired Vatican archivist, who is now confined to his home at the age of 91. An aide said that the car had been in the custody of two Italian men who were supposed to be making minor repairs.
