Scripture research requires deep faith, Pope tells scholars

September 12, 2014

Speaking to Italian scholars who were celebrating the 43rd National Biblical Week, Pope Francis remarked that a proper approach to Scripture scholarship requires a deep sense of faith.

The Pope explained that the purpose of Biblical research is to shed light on the message of the text. To do this, the scholar must recognize the Word of God in the Scriptures, “and this is possible only if his spiritual life is fervent, rich in dialogue with the Lord.”

Since not every believer has the ability to search out the research connected with a Biblical text, the Pope said, “this task is entrusted to exegetes.” Their work, he continued, requires academic training, but “above all, faith.”

Yes, I think it is true. Now this month of October is the "month of the Bible" in Brazil, in which the faithful are encouraged to read the Bible. So last Sunday, despite a great homily we could have had due to that day's Gospel, we were lectured about how important the Bible is, and that we should read it. Oh, Lord, please do something about our national bishops conference!!

I do not know why after literally centuries why these principles are not better understood and the battle-lines within the Church well-defined. The temptation toward "intellectual manipulation" of the Scriptures is well known...; In fact, ironically, it was the perennial excuse given in the Middle Ages as to why lay Catholics should not have access to the Sacred Books. But it is NOT ENOUGH that the Holy Father merely make observations, like other Popes, he needs to militantly enforce standards.
