Xaverian missionaries doubt police explanation for nuns' murder in Burundi

September 11, 2014

A representative of the Xaverian missionary sisters in Burundi has voiced dissatisfaction with police officials’ investigation into the murder of three nuns.

On September 10, police announced the arrest of a man who, they said, had confessed to the killings. But Sister Delia Guadagnini was not persuaded. “We do not think that this horrible crime was committed by a single person,” she told the Fides news agency. “We do not believe in the police’s version.”

Sister Guadagnini, a former superior of the Xaverian order, voiced her suspicion that police had quickly found a suspect as “an excuse to divert the investigation.” She said, however, that the Xaverian sisters would not be intimidated by the crime and would continue their work in Burundi.
