Cardinal Zen: Hong Kong democracy activists must be ready to pay a price

September 10, 2014

Cardinal Joseph Zen has warned that pro-democracy forces in Hong Kong may bring on a harsh reaction from the Chinese government. But the retired Bishop of Hong Kong nevertheless urges protesters to be resolute.

“We cannot resign ourselves to be slaves, what other choice do we then have but to resist?” Cardinal Zen writes in a column posted by the AsiaNews service.

The cardinal observes that protesters in Hong Kong are not a threat to Chinese rule, but he adds that a totalitarian regime always fears the people. For that reason, he says, “We have every reason to fear that maybe we’ll end up paying a higher price than what we expect.”

Chris Patten, the last governor of Hong Kong, "likened Beijing’s proposed plans for vetting all candidates to the state-run democracy in place in Iran." As in all things, the Chinese government says things, agrees to things and cares little what they are about as long as it gives them some kind of advantage. The UN Charter, the Sino-British Joint Declaration, etc, are paper - question anything and you're interfering in their "internal affairs." Cardinal Zen knows and the Vatican should too.
