Ecuador approves further recognition of same-sex civil unions

September 04, 2014

President Rafael Correa of Ecuador has announced that homosexual civil unions, which are allowed under the nation’s 2008 constitution, may now be listed on national identification cards.

“Gays, lesbians, transgender, and transsexual people have the full constitutional right to include their civil union on their ID cards,” said Correa, according to Agence France-Presse.

Although the constitution permits civil unions, it defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman and limits adoption to couples of the opposite sex.

The South American nation of 15.8 million is 91% Catholic.
