Priest beaten, jailed in India
September 03, 2014
A violent gang vandalized a Catholic school in the east-central Indian state of Chhattisgarh and beat its headmaster, Father Ligo Mathew. Other faculty members suffered injuries in the attack.
According to MattersIndia.com, a citizen journalist site, three girls had accused the priest of using foul language.
Following the attack on Father Mathew, the local magistrate ordered him to be jailed without bail for 14 days, and Archbishop Victor Henry Thakur declared a day of prayer and fasting. The prelate told the Fides news agency that the charge was “totally unfounded.”
