Catholic paper protests as South African broadcaster drops coverage for Pope's Christmas Mass

The Southern Cross, the newspaper operated the bishops’ conferences of southern Africa, has denounced the decision of South Africa’s broadcasting network to stop airing the Pope’s midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) had made a commitment in 2010 to broadcast the Christmas Mass from the Vatican each year. An editorial in the Southern Cross charged that the decision to renege on that promise was “disrespectful treatment” of the Catholic faith. The paper argued that “the cavalier way in which the SABC has decided to cancel the only significant Catholic event it covers in the year indicates an unacceptable hostility towards our Church by a publicly funded organ of the state.”
