Hindu fundamentalists 'reconvert' Christians in Indian village

Hindu militants in India’s state of Uttar Pradesh have announced the “reconversion” of about 70 people who had embraced Christianity, the AsiaNews service reports.
The Hindu militants denied that the “reconversions” had been prompted by violence or intimidation, claiming that the residents of a remote village had “realized their mistake,” and returned to the Hindu fold. The group tore down the cross on the village church, announcing that it after a “purification” ceremony it would be converted into a shrine to the Hindu god Shiva.
Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai expressed his “sadness for what happened” in Uttar Pradesh. The Global Council of Indian Christians, in a stronger statement, condemned the “silence of the authorities,” saying that “violence against minorities goes unpunished.”
