Pope-emeritus Benedict celebrates Mass with former students

August 25, 2014

Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI celebrated Mass with some of his former students on August 24, as the Ratzinger Schuelerkreis concluded its annual meeting.

The Schuelerkreis is an informal seminar, in which former students have gathered for years to meet with their mentor and discuss a chosen topic. Until his resignation last year, Pope Benedict had continued to attend the sessions.

In 2013 and again this year, the retired Pontiff, who eschews public meetings, did not attend the seminar sessions, but presided at the concluding Mass.

The Schulerkreis, meeting in Castel Gandolfo from August 21 to 24, focused this year on the theology of the Cross.
