Further action needed in Iraq, USCCB president tells President Obama

August 20, 2014

Citing remarks made by Pope Francis, the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has called upon President Barack Obama to do more to protect the persecuted religious minorities of Iraq.

“More must be done,” Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville said in a recent letter to President Obama. “Pope Francis called upon ‘the international community, particularly through the norms and mechanisms of international law, to do all that it can to stop and to prevent further systematic violence against ethnic and religious minorities.’ I urge the United States to answer this call in concert with the international community.”
