Report: Christians flee Syrian city as Islamic State advances

August 01, 2014

Christians have fled Al-Hasakah, a city of 190,000 in northeastern Syria, as forces from the Islamic State of Syria and the Levant (ISIL) advanced upon the area, the Assyrian International News Agency reported.

The jihadist group, also known as Islamic State, controls approximately 30% of Syria and 40% of Iraq. It ordered Christians in Mosul, Iraq’s 2nd-largest city, to leave or convert to Islam.
