Armed resistance to Islamic rule arising in Mosul

July 31, 2014

Pockets of armed resistance against Islamic rule have begun to form in Mosul, Iraq, the Fides news service reports.

Young people have formed armed groups to oppose Islamic militants, and killed at least five people last weekend. Meanwhile Islamic groups continue to vandalize Christian houses of worship.

However, Chaldean Catholic Bishop Amel Shimon Nona of Mosul told Fides that, contrary to widely published reports, no churches have been destroyed in Mosul. He did say that some church buildings had been occupied by Islamic forces and damaged.

Bravo for these bold young people! Everyone has a right -- in fact, a duty! -- to defend himself. Let's hope someone makes appropriate arms available to them and let's pray for their success.
