Minnesota judge rejects archdiocesan plea to dismiss abuse suit, sets court date

July 22, 2014

A Minnesota judge has rejected a plea by the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis to dismiss a sex-abuse lawsuit.

“This case needs to be tried,” said Judge John Van de North, setting a September 22 court date. The case involves a claim that archdiocesan officials were negligent in giving a parish assignment to a priest who had been accused of earlier episodes of abuse. The St. Paul archdiocese contends that at the time, in the 1970s, Archbishop John Roach was unaware of the earlier abuse charges, which had been lodged while the priest was stationed in the neighboring Diocese of Winona.
