Stratford Caldecott, English Catholic writer, succumbs to cancer at 60

July 18, 2014

Stratford Caldecott, a noted English Catholic writer and editor, died on July 17 at the age of 60, after a long struggle with cancer.

For years Caldecott had edited Second Spring, a magazine that focused on Christianity in the arts. He was an Oxford research fellow, a co-editor of the British edition of Magnificat, and a member of the editorial board of the international theological journal Communio.

Caldecott came to wider international prominence during the last weeks of his life, when his daughter, Sophie Caldecott, launched a Twitter campaign to secure an advance viewing of latest Avengers film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, before he died. That "#CapforStrat" campaign prompted a number of movie stars, including those who portrayed the superheroes in the Avengers series, to send messages of support.

I knew Strat well. He and his wife Leonie went from one project for spreading the Faith to another -- always with minimal resources but maximal Faith. Two saintly people.
