UN committee demands change in Irish abortion law

July 16, 2014

The UN’s Committee on Human Rights has condemned Ireland’s ban on abortion as “unacceptable cruelty,” and demanded liberalization of the law.

Following testimony by several pro-abortion organizations, the UN committee pressed Irish justice minister Frances Fitzgerald to defend the country’s law, with one member claiming, inaccurately, that under existing international law, legal access to abortion is “an absolute right.”

Thomas Finegan, who testified at the Geneva meeting on behalf of the Dublin-based group Family and Life, reminded the officials that there is no “right” to abortion in international law, and that in fact existing treaties refer to the rights of unborn children. His testimony was dismissed by Sir Nigel Rodley, the chairman of the UN panel, as “breathtakingly arrogant.”

Thank God for the breath-taking arrogance or, much more properly speaking, the courage of Mr. Finegan. Over recent years here in the States there has been a growing movement particularly in the schools to curb bullying. These UN committees need to be confronted, and their bullying behavior is not acceptable.

The remarks are simply lies and should be treated as such.

Why do we, or anyone else, even bother with the UN? Their thirst for power is incredible and their stupidity is abysmal.
