Pontifical Council issues statement for World Tourism Day

July 11, 2014

The Vatican has released its annual statement for World Tourism Day, with a focus on the relationship between tourism and community development.

The statement, issued by the Pontifical Council for Migrants, says that tourism should be conducted in ways that support the communities being visited, respecting local cultures and contributing to their economic growth. “It is imperative that the economic benefits of tourism reach all sectors of local society, and have a direct impact on families, while at the same time take full advantage of local human resources,” the Pontifical Council says. World Tourism Day will be observed this year on September 27.
