Speaker of European Parliament renews invitation for Pope to address body

Martin Schulz, who has been elected to a new term as speaker of the European Parliament, has said that his invitation to Pope Francis to address the body remains open.

"I would be very happy if the Pope agreed to come to visit the European Parliament," Schulz told reporters. The German politician had formally extended an invitation to the Pontiff last October, in an essay published in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano. Schulz recalled in that essay that 25 years earlier, Pope John Paul II had delivered an inspirational address to the body.
