Spanish bishops pay tribute to king upon abdication

June 03, 2014

The executive committee of the Spanish Episcopal Conference has issued a statement paying tribute to King Juan Carlos I, who has announced his abdication.

Juan Carlos, 76, has served as king of Spain since the death of Francisco Franco in 1975.

The bishops paid tribute to the king’s “generous dedication and his contribution to the recent history of Spain, in particular the establishment and the consolidation of democratic life, with special relevance during the period of the political transition” in the years following Franco’s death.
