5 bishops to travel to Washington, lobby on behalf of immigration reform

May 14, 2014

Five members of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration will travel to Washington on May 29 and urge members of the House of Representatives to pass immigration reform legislation.

Referring to a recent Mass celebrated at the Mexican border, Auxiliary Bishop Eusebio Elizondo of Seattle said that “our trip to the border opened our eyes, even more than previously, to the human tragedies generated by our immigration system.”

“The only real solution to this broken system is action by Congress,” he added. “We need a debate and vote on this issue. Inaction is equivalent to supporting the status quo, which Americans agree needs to be changed.”

The Senate passed the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act by a 68-32 margin in June, but the legislation has stalled in the House.

Do the bishops simply want change? Do they have specific moral ideas? Are the lives of the illegal immigrants in jeopardy? If so, they have a right to our food. They are refugees. Or do the illegal immigrants simply desire a better life? If so, they do not have a right to immigrate.

We pray that someone will re-evangelize their dioceses while they are politicking!
