Kenya legalizes polygamy

May 02, 2014

President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya has signed legislation legalizing polygamy.

The nation’s bishops, joined by evangelical and mainline Protestant leaders, had opposed the measure, according to the Religion News Service.

CNN reported that polygamy “has long been a cultural practice” in the East African nation, which is 45% Protestant, 27% Catholic, and 10% Muslim, with 10% retaining indigenous beliefs.

Polygamy is legal in over 40 nations, most of them predominantly Muslim.
