3 new members appointed to National Review Board

Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has appointed three new members to the National Review Board, the lay body formed in 2002 in the wake of the clerical abuse scandal.
Mary Huffman is a common pleas judge in Montgomery County, Ohio; Donald Schmid is a federal prosecutor in Indiana; and Nelle Moriarty is a marriage and family therapist in Minnesota.
“The National Review Board plays a vital role as a consultative body assisting the bishops in ensuring the accountability of our procedures in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People,” said Archbishop Kurtz. “The whole Church, especially the laity, at both the diocesan and national levels, needs to be engaged in maintaining safe environments in the Church for children and young people.”

Each time I hear or read the name of this board, I remember that in June 2003 Gov. Frank Keating resigned from it. He said then, "[t]o resist grand jury subpoenas, to suppress the names of offending clerics, to deny, to obfuscate, to explain away; that is the model of a criminal organization, not my church." But 11 years later, can we say these practices have disappeared from our church? If you think we can, I invite you to look at the current situation in Puerto Rico, just the latest example.
