Political stability in Niger 'deteriorating day by day,' bishops warn

April 30, 2014

The Catholic bishops of Niger are warning that the political situation in the African nation is “deteriorating day by day,” the Fides news service reports.

The bishops, in their statement, denounced government officials who “user their political mandate for their personal purposes, interpreting laws in their favor.” They urged public officials to recognize that “political cheating” can have serious conflicts, fostering “deadly conflicts.”

Niger, a severely impoverished nation, now faces a food crisis; the situation is aggravated by an influx of refugees escaping from the violence of Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria.
