Will Pope-emeritus Benedict attend Sunday canonizations?

April 24, 2014

Pope-emeritus Benedict has been invited to attend the canonizations of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II on April 27, but his participation in the ceremony has not yet been confirmed.

"The Pope-emeritus has been invited, we'll be happy if he comes but we respect his liberty and decision as to whether he is up to it," Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, told reporters.

The former Pontiff has avoided public appearances since his resignation in February 2013. But he made an exception from that policy when, at the invitation of Pope Francis, he attended the February consistory at which 19 new cardinals were elevated.
