SSPX leader decries canonizations of Popes John XXIII, John Paul II

April 23, 2014

The leaders of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) “vigorously protest” the canonizations of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II, Bishop Bernard Fellay has announced.

The traditionalist prelate, who remains suspended from ministry, said that the canonization of the two Pontiffs is unacceptable because both are connected with the Second Vatican Council, “whose rotten fruits are the indisputable indication of the Church’s self-destruction.” Bishop Fellay said that the “errors contained in the documents of the Vatican Council, and particularly the liturgical reforms, “could not possibly be the work of the Holy Ghost.”

Summarizing his complaints against the two Pontiffs, Bishop Fellay asked “how can it be possible to offer to the whole Church as an example of sanctity the instigator of Vatican Council II and the Pope of Assisi and human rights?”

Pope Benedict tried hard to end the SSPX schism but was repeatedly rebuffed by this ultra-traditionalist group. I hope Pope Francis won't waste any time with the SSPX, as they are beyond reach. However, we should pray for these poor souls.

The unspoken distinction in his comments is human rights as opposed to divine rights. The reality is that ultimately there can be no true opposition unless there is a misunderstanding of the word "rights." Obamacare invokes this terminology erroneously. The traditional understanding has receded. Thus the landscape is much changed. Whether in favor or against, or among those who don't particularly care, it should be clear to all Roman Catholics that a statement was made on Mercy Sunday.

Yes, who would ever want to be known as the pope of human rights?

The comments of SSPX leaders since Pope Francis came into office have shown beyond any doubt that this group is not Catholic and there is no hope of reconciliation with it. I wish the Catholic press would stop reporting about the SSPX excepting any official contact it has with the Holy See.

I guess that they will have to become sedevacantists.

"Pope of Assisi and human rights" I guess this is meant as an insult to JP II. Wide has become the gulf that separates our shores!

Yes, what terrible person could ever support the idea of human rights?
