Philippine bishops warn faithful against self-crucifixion

The Catholic bishops of the Philippines have argued strongly against the customs practiced by some zealous believers who scourge or even crucify themselves on Good Friday.
Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen, the president of the episcopal conference, suggested that instead of “extreme forms” of self-mortification, believers should do something to serve others.
“If what you do makes you love others more, than it is pleasing to God,” the archbishop said. “But if you do it for photographs—for you to be famous—then that becomes spiritual vanity.”
