South Sudan’s Christian leaders appeal for peace

Warning of a humanitarian catastrophe, South Sudan’s Catholic and Protestant leaders urged the parties in the nation’s four-month-old conflict to stop fighting.

“We called on the warring parties to stop fighting and called on the international community to help provide necessary support to the displaced persons, whose properties have been destroyed,” the South Sudan Council of Churches said in a statement, as quoted by the Sudan Tribune. “Their sources of livelihoods have not been spared since this conflict erupted.”

Referring to the nation’s 2011 independence vote from Islamist Sudan, the Christian leaders added that “this is not the future for which the people of this country voted. They wanted free and independent state. They voted to live in peace, tranquility and in love with one another as brothers and sisters and people of God.”
