Mississippi governor signs religious freedom legislation

April 04, 2014

Gov. Phil Bryant has signed the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which provides in some cases a legal means of redress for “a person whose religious exercise has been burdened” by state or county ordinances and regulations.

The legislation, opposed by gay advocacy groups, passed by margins of 79-43 in the state house and 37-14 in the state senate.

“Those who understand the importance and cherish the historic understanding of religious freedom are grateful for leaders who respond to fact and not fictitious claims of those who are trying to quarantine faith within the walls of our churches or homes,” said Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, according to the Associated Press.
