Rash of vandalism at churches in Vienna

April 01, 2014

Vienna’s Cardinal Christoph Schönborn has reacted with horror to an outbreak of vandalism in Catholic churches in the city.

The cardinal said that the weekend attacks on four different churches were “the worst act of vandalism in my time as archbishop.” Statues were destroyed and altars damaged in each church. “I am shocked by the devastation,” the cardinal said.

Police arrested one man who was suspected of vandalizing one church, but released him before realizing that several other churches had been more seriously damaged. Police are now searching for the suspect.
