‘The bishop who stood up to China’

The Reuters news agency has published a profile of Bishop Thaddeus Ma Daqin, “the bishop who stood up to China.”

In 2012, Bishop Ma, then 44, was ordained auxiliary bishop of Shanghai with the approval of both the Holy See and the Chinese government. At his ordination Mass, he repudiated his membership in the government-run Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, and since that time has been under house arrest.
