In his homily at a morning Mass on January 30, Pope Francis recalled the remark of Pope Paul VI that it is absurd for a believer to say that he is close to Christ but distant from the Church.
The Word of God comes to the faithful through the Church, the Pope said, and a humble believer recognizes that he is only a small part of the great Christian community.
Fidelity to the Church is a pillar of Christian life, the Pope continued. He added that the faithful also have an obligation to pray for the Church, and in prayer to deepen their sense of belonging to the Christian community.
