End funding for destructive embryo research, European bishops' group urges EU

The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) has called upon the European Parliament to end government financing of research that involves the destruction of human embryos.

COMECE, which represents the bishops’ conferences of the European Union nations, said that it is “of paramount importance” that the EU cease funding embryo research. The organization notes that almost 1.9 million Europeans signed a petition against the practice. Moreover, the EU standards call for the support of promising scientific research, and embryo research to date has not proven as promising as research using stem cells from adult tissues, COMECE argues.
