Catholic education leader defends support for Common Core, receipt of Gates funds

The president of the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) has defended his group’s support for the adoption of Common Core educational standards by Catholic schools, as well as the group’s acceptance of a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to train teachers in the Common Core.
In an email message to NCEA members, Brother Robert Bimonte, FSC, said that his group remains committed to “a rigorous curriculum infused with Catholic values as we prepare our students for this life and life everlasting.” Critics of the Common Core have argued that the standards will shift Catholic schools toward the same standards as secular schools, eroding their Catholic identity.
Brother Bimonte insisted that the NCEA was not unique in accepting funds from the Gates Foundation. He pointed out that other Catholic institutions—including Catholic Charities, Catholic Relief Services, and Catholic University—had also accepted Gates money.

The NCEA is liberal. I taught in a Catholic High School where the new union (claimed not a union) took over the running of the school. The organizers were heavily infiltrated with gay organizers and other liberal views. I went to the NLRB and forced an interpretation which declared that it is indeed a union. This culminated in their support for the actions of a liberal brother to bring in lay leadership for the school. The brother was accused 40 cnts of sodomy in 3 states for seducing students.

I get it, everyone else is doing it....Cristo Rey did take over 1/2million dollars in Sep. 2010 for Common Core (CC) - way ahead of many others, which makes one wonder about this Jesuit-created organization. The NCEA has been in cahoots with Loyola Chicago for a while about Common Core - again the Jesuits - though it has claimed to only be a information center for it. CC was/is imposed on parents by Catholic school systems, though parents are the prime educators of their children (yeah, sure).

Memo to Bro. Robert: Followers of Christ are called to change the secular culture, not to be changed by it. Why are you buying into a program that has been co-opted by Obama administration grants from the "Stimulus Bill" (funds that were supposed to go for job creation)? Even secular educators are balking at the programming and intrusive data gathering that our government has mandated for Common Core!
