Democracy supporters plan demonstrations against Hamas rule in Gaza

November 08, 2013

Young people in the Gaza Strip are planning a mass demonstration against the “dictatorship of terror” under the Hamas government, the AsiaNews service reports.

The leader of a new group known as Tamarud Gaza, which is working toward democratic rule in Gaza, spoke with AsiaNews under condition of anonymity, claiming that more than 500,000 people support their cause. Their demonstrations, inspired by the “Arab Spring” demonstrations elsewhere in the Middle East, are scheduled for November 11: the anniversary of the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The Tamarud Gaza leader charged that Hamas has organized a “reign of terror” in the region. “People live in the total absence of the rule of law,” he said. Despite threats and intimidation by Hamas-backed thugs, the group has organized by using the internet, and taken advantage of social media to reach out to potential sympathizers in the West.
