Mexican priests defy extortion effort

Threatening to kidnap priests’ relatives, criminal gangs have attempted to extort money from three priests in Aguascalientes and priests in at least seven other Mexican states, the Fides news agency reported.

Bishop José María de la Torre Martín of Aguascalientes, which is located in central Mexico, told Fides that the priests have ignored the threats.
