Vatican schedules special Mass for Lampedusa accident victims

October 08, 2013

Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, the prefect of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches, will preside at a Mass celebrated in the Vatican basilica for the victims of last week’s tragedy off the shore of Lampedusa.

Noting that many of the nearly 200 immigrants who died when a ship caught fire were Eastern-rite Christians from Ethiopia and Eritrea, the Vatican said that bishops from those countries would concelebrate the Eucharistic liturgy. The Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 9, at the tomb of St. Peter in the lower level of the basilica.
