Croatian priest beatified

September 30, 2013

Father Miroslav Bulesic (1920-47) was beatified as a martyr in Pula, a city of 60,000 in northwestern Croatia, on September 28.

Croatian Radiotelevision reported that all of Croatia’s bishops, over 670 priests, and 17,000 pilgrims were present at the beatification Mass, whose principal celebrant was Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

L’Osservatore Romano reported that after Father Bulesic administered the Sacrament of Confirmation, Communists beat “him mercilessly, hitting him wherever they could. Fr. Miroslav was covered in blood from head to foot. Twice they heard him exclaim: ‘Jesus, receive my soul.’ Then his murderer slit his throat with a knife. The martyr’s blood spattered the walls and floors.”
