No Sunday events at Catholic schools, New Orleans archdiocese rules

September 23, 2013

Archbishop Gregory Aymond of New Orleans, Louisiana has instructed Catholic schools to stop scheduling social and athletic events on Sundays.

The archbishop had previously asked schools to keep Sundays free, encouraging busy families to attend Mass. He has now made that policy mandatory beginning with the 2014-15 academic year.

Archbishop Aymond said that the policy is directed particularly at Catholic schools that are not affiliated with a diocese.

Good for Archbishop Aymond! Reclaiming Sundays as a holy day of rest has been needed for a very long time.
