India: mob of 100 surrounds Christian couple, beats woman

Catholic World News - September 16, 2013

As an Indian Christian couple attempted to evangelize a village in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka, they were surrounded by a mob of 100 Hindu radicals, according to the Global Council of Indian Christians.

The mob “snatched the Bibles and [tracts] from their hands, tore them into pieces, [and beat] them on the street, shouting at them,” according to the council, before beating the wife “mercilessly in front of her husband.”

The Hindu, one of India’s leading newspapers, reported that a local police official asked the angry mob not to press charges against the beaten woman.
