Vietnamese religious leaders back Catholic bishop, decry government smears

Protestant and Buddhist leaders in Vietnam have joined Catholic Church officials in the defense of Bishop Paul Nguyen Thai Hop of Vinh, who has been the target of a government propaganda campaign.
A coalition of religious leaders urged government officials to cease public attacks on the bishop and police assaults on peaceful protesters. Their statement asked international leaders to join in the effort to protect human rights in Vietnam.
