Veteran Vatican-watcher rips Roman Curia for mishandling SSPX affair

Sandro Magister, the veteran Vatican-watcher, issues a blistering critique of the way the Roman Curia, and especially the Secretariat of State, have handled the announcement of the Pope's decision to life the excommunication of traditionalist bishops. "The isolation of Pope Benedict, the ineptitude of the curia, and the misfires of the secretariat of state" contributed to the anger and misunderstanding surrounding the Pope's move, Magister writes.
The Chiesa column-- issued before the Vatican released an overdue explanation of the Pope's decision to lift the excommunications-- notes that the traditionalists are not yet fully reconciled. As Magister puts it:
The lifting of this excommunication therefore did not by any means heal the schism between Rome and the Lefebvrists, just as the lifting of the excommunications between Rome and patriarchate of Constantinople – agreed on December 7, 1965, by Paul VI and Athenagoras – did not by any means mark a return to unity between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches of the East.
