Papal envoy, in El Salvador for jubilee year conclusion, prays for Romero canonization
August 12, 2013
Pope Francis appointed Cuban Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino as his special envoy to the solemn conclusion of El Salvador’s national Eucharistic congress on August 11. The congress marked the closing of a jubilee year for the Church in the Central American nation.
The jubilee year commemorated the 100th anniversary of three events: the elevation of the metropolitan Archdiocese of San Salvador to archdiocesan status, the creation of the Diocese of Santa Ana, and the creation of the Diocese of San Miguel.
During his homily, Cardinal Ortega prayed for the canonization of the late Archbishop Óscar Romero (1917-80), the Fides news agency reported.
