'Fraternity' will be theme for World Day of Peace

July 31, 2013

Pope Francis has announced that the theme for the 47th World Day of peace will be: “Fraternity, the foundation and pathway of peace.”

“In the face of the many tragedies that afflict the family of nations-- poverty, hunger, underdevelopment, conflicts, migrations, pollution, inequalities, injustice, organized crime, fundamentalisms-- fraternity is the foundation and the pathway to peace,” the Vatican noted in a statement revealing the Pope’s chosen theme. “In a world that is constantly growing more interdependent, the good of fraternity is one that we cannot do without.”

The World Day of Peace, established by Pope Paul VI, is celebrated each year on January 1. A papal message for the occasion is released several weeks earlier, with each year’s message taking a different approach to the question of peace. Later this year Pope Francis will release his first message for the annual observance.
