Pope Francis met on June 15 with José Manuel Durao Barroso, the president of the European Commission.
A Vatican statement released after the meeting reported that the Pope had spoken with Barroso about the process of European integration, the worldwide economic crisis, human rights, and religious freedom, with a special emphasis on the rights of Christian minorities in various countries.
