Philippine bishops call for truth commission to examine election results
May 29, 2013
Three Philippine bishops, including the former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, have called for the creation of a truth commission to examine the veracity of the May 13 midterm election results.
“I am in favor of a truth commission to investigate recent poll irregularities in order that justice may be achieved, honesty promoted,” said Archbishop Angel Lagdameo of Jaro.
The election saw victories for supporters of President Benigno Aquino III, who clashed with the nation’s bishops over the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012, which mandates the funding and widespread distribution of contraceptives and abortifacients.
