Film on Pope Francis secures $25M in backing

April 29, 2013

Christian Peschken, a convert to Catholicism who once served as chairman of the Social Awareness Committee of the Producers Guild of America, has secured $25 million in financial backing for a film tentatively entitled Friend of the Poor: The Pope Francis Story.

“We want to be authentic and truthful about the life of Jorge Bergoglio/Pope Francis,” who since his conversion has done work for EWTN. “We portray him as who he is: a person who constantly points to Jesus and the message of Jesus--of love, of responsibility to neighbor--a person who puts Jesus first and everything else second.”

Journalist Andrea Tornelli and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, who has won three Academy Awards, have agreed to take part in the production of the film.
