4 people stabbed during Mass at New Mexico parish

April 29, 2013

A man rushed at the church choir during the final hymn at Mass at a large parish in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After stabbing four people, including the choir director and the flutist, the man was tackled and held by parishioners until his arrest.

Lawrence Capener, a 24-year-old parishioner, faces several felony charges.

“This is the first time in my 30 years serving as Archbishop in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and as Bishop of Lubbock, that anything like this has occurred,” said Archbishop Michael Sheehan. “I pray for all who have been harmed, their families, the parishioners and that nothing like this will ever happen again.”

I think the music at most parishes is dreadful, too, and there is no recourse, but even thinking about this runs shivers. Violence solves nothing. It would be better to ask the bishop to make it a requirement to read and implement the Church documents. Including the PRIMACY of chant.

It seems that Haugen-esque schmaltz finally drove someone over the edge.

Gosh, I hope not. I'm in our choir.

"A man rushed at the church choir during the final hymn at Mass..." Don't act like we haven't all dreamed of doing the same.
