Azerbaijan tightens religious controls

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan has tightened the nation’s control over religious institutions.

Under a decree signed by the president, citizens of Azerbaijan are permitted to read or watch only those religious books and videos that have been approved by the government.

The nation of 9.5 million, which is located in the Caucasus, is 93% Muslim and 5% Orthodox, and has only one Catholic church.
