African bishops denounce corruption, call for good governance

Lamenting the “scourge of corruption,” the Symposium of Catholic Bishops’ Conferences in Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) has issued a pastoral letter entitled “Governance, Common Good and Democratic Transitions in Africa.”

“This Pastoral Letter is the Church's contribution to the promotion of good governance and democratic transitions in Africa and should be disseminated as such to all people of good will,” the bishops state. “Being neutral, regarding partisan politics, the Church wishes to humbly propose the values which will lead to justice, liberty, and the fundamental respect for human dignity. These are essential values in the creation of a just social order.”
